Detailed Itinerary: 8 Days Leh Ladakh Adventure
Day 1: Delhi to Leh – Arrival and Acclimatization (Flight)
Your adventure begins with an early morning flight from Delhi to Leh (approximately 1 hour 20 minutes). As the aircraft descends through the mountains, you’ll catch your first breathtaking views of the Himalayas.
Upon arrival at Kushok Bakula Rimpochee Airport (one of the world’s most scenic landings), our representative will greet you and transfer you to your hotel.
The rest of the day is dedicated to mandatory acclimatization. At 11,500 feet, your body needs time to adjust to the high altitude. We recommend:
-
Complete rest – no showers on day one
-
Drinking plenty of water (3-4 liters)
-
Light walking only
-
Avoiding alcohol and heavy meals
In the evening, take a short stroll through Leh Market (if you feel comfortable) to soak in the Tibetan-influenced culture. Dinner and overnight at the hotel in Leh.
Day 2: Leh Sightseeing – Monasteries and Local Culture
After breakfast, we begin exploring the rich cultural heritage of Leh:
Morning Session:
-
Shanti Stupa: A white-domed Buddhist monument offering panoramic views of Leh city
-
Leh Palace: The former royal palace, reminiscent of a mini-Potala Palace in Tibet
-
Magnetic Hill: Experience the optical illusion where vehicles appear to roll uphill against gravity
Afternoon Session:
-
Hemis Monastery: The largest and wealthiest monastery in Ladakh, famous for its annual festival
-
Thiksey Monastery: An architectural marvel resembling the Potala Palace, housing a magnificent 15-meter tall Maitreya Buddha statue
Return to your hotel by evening. Dinner and overnight in Leh.
Day 3: Leh to Nubra Valley via Khardung La Pass (120 km, 5-6 hours)
Today’s journey takes you across one of the world’s highest motorable roads!
Morning:
After an early breakfast, we begin the ascent to Khardung La Pass (18,380 feet) . Stop at the famous signboard for photos – you’ve conquered one of the highest passes on Earth!
Afternoon:
Descend into the beautiful Nubra Valley, also known as the “Orchard of Ladakh.” Upon arrival:
-
Check into your camp/hotel
-
Visit Diskit Monastery with its giant Maitreya Buddha statue overlooking the valley
-
Experience the unique double-humped Bactrian camels at the sand dunes of Hunder
Evening bonfire (weather permitting) under a star-filled sky. Dinner and overnight at camp/hotel in Nubra Valley.
Day 4: Nubra Valley to Leh (Return via Khardung La)
After breakfast, enjoy some free time for photography or exploring Hunder village on foot. You can also opt for an ATV ride on the sand dunes (at additional cost).
By midday, we begin our journey back to Leh via the same route, crossing Khardung La once again. Arrive in Leh by late afternoon. The rest of the evening is free for shopping at Leh Market or resting. Dinner and overnight at hotel in Leh.
Day 5: Leh to Pangong Lake via Chang La Pass (160 km, 5-6 hours)
Today features the highlight of many travelers’ trips – the stunning Pangong Lake.
Morning:
After breakfast, we drive east towards the Tibetan border, crossing Chang La Pass (17,688 feet) , the third highest motorable road in Ladakh. Stop at the Chang La temple and bakery for tea and maggi.
Afternoon:
Arrive at Pangong Lake – a 130km long brackish lake spanning India and China (only 40% is in India). The lake’s color changes from deep blue to emerald green to turquoise throughout the day.
Spend the afternoon walking along the shore, taking photographs, and simply absorbing the surreal beauty (this is where scenes from “3 Idiots” were filmed). Check into lakeside camps for a magical evening. Dinner and overnight at camp near Pangong Lake.
Day 6: Pangong Lake to Leh via Tso Moriri Lake (Extended Adventure)
Note: This route requires a special Inner Line Permit and involves a longer driving day.
After sunrise photography at Pangong, we take the less-traveled route via the remote Tso Moriri Lake (another high-altitude lake, equally beautiful but more peaceful).
The journey takes us through rugged terrain, remote villages, and stunning landscapes. We’ll have a picnic lunch en route. Visit Korzok Monastery overlooking Tso Moriri before continuing our journey back to Leh.
Arrive in Leh by late evening. Dinner and overnight at hotel in Leh.
(Alternative: If you prefer a shorter day, return directly from Pangong to Leh via Chang La)
Day 7: Leh – Free Day for Exploration or Optional Activities
Today is yours to explore at your own pace. Choose from these options:
Optional Activities:
-
White Water Rafting in the Zanskar River (seasonal, additional cost)
-
Visit to Alchi Monastery (one of the oldest in Ladakh)
-
Trek to Stok Kangri Base Camp (for serious trekkers)
-
Shopping at Leh Market for Pashmina shawls, Tibetan jewelry, and Buddhist artifacts
-
Spa and relaxation at your hotel
Use this day to rest, reflect on your journey, or cross off any sights you missed. Dinner and overnight at hotel in Leh.
Day 8: Leh to Delhi – Departure with Memories
After breakfast, transfer to Leh airport for your flight back to Delhi. As you fly over the Himalayas, you’ll carry with you the memories of crystal-clear lakes, friendly locals, breathtaking passes, and the unique peace that only Ladakh can offer.
End of unforgettable Ladakh journey.
